Scholarship Policy and Application Procedure
GENERAL INFORMATION:
This package includes information relating to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Pennsylvania (MOPH) Scholarship program including eligibility and application requirements, a Scholarship application Form, and a Q&A section with answers to some frequently asked questions regarding the Program.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart is a non-profit membership organization associated with the Military Services. Membership is voluntary and not automatic upon receipt of the Purple Heart.
A MOPH Associate Membership or membership in the MOPH ladies Auxiliary does not by itself convey scholarship eligibility.
Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, incidental fees, room & board, and other direct associated costs of higher education except transportation expenses.
DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:
The program is decentralized to the Chapter level where a three member Committee will select their applicants by June 15 annually. The Committee will consist of non- relatives of Scholarship applicants. Scholarship Committee recommendations will be forwarded to the Department Finance Officer NLT July 10th.
Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for a Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Pennsylvania Scholarship the applicant must be a resident of Pennsylvania and fulfill the following criteria:
-A member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Pennsylvania. A Purple Heart recipient who is not a member of the MOPH can become a member by applying online through the MOPH website:
www.purpleheart.org or by calling the Membership Department at (703) 642-5360. Or
- The spouse, widow or direct lineal descendant (child, step-child, adopted child, or grandchild) of any living Purple Heart member at the time of application. Great-grandchildren are not eligible. or
- The spouse, widow or direct lineal descendent (child, step-child, adopted child, or
grandchild) of a service member killed-in-action or who died of wounds. Great-
grandchildren are not eligible. If the Purple Heart recipient is listed as killed-in-action or
died of wounds, supporting documentation must accompany the application.
And be:
- A graduate or upcoming graduate (Senior) of a high school who has been accepted as a
FULL-TIME undergraduate student (12 or more semester credit hours, or 18 quarter
credit hours, or as determined by the school) at an accredited Pennsylvania college,
university or trade school. Or
-Accepted by or enrolled as a FULL-TIME undergraduate student (12 or more semester
credit hours, or 18 quarter credit hours, or as determined by the school) at an
accredited Pennsylvania college, university or trade school at the time the scholarship is
awarded, (graduate students are not eligible)
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A Department of Pennsylvania MOPH Scholarship Application must include a completed
Application Form and the following supporting materials: Official High School and/or College
transcript, including the latest completed semester or quarter of the current year; a birth
certificate; letters of recommendation; and an essay by the applicant.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that his or her application and his or her
academic record is properly presented to the MOPH Chapter.
Applications that are not complete, or are not received by the deadline (June 15) will be
disqualified and will not be submitted to the Chapter Scholarship Committee for evaluation.
The Chapter Scholarship Committee will consider an applicant's academic achievement,
extracurricular activities, community and military service, work experience, strength of letters
of recommendation, and content of the essay. Decisions regarding eligibility for a Scholarship or
the award of a Scholarship will be made by the Chapter Scholarship Committee and are final.
MOPH Scholarships may not be applied to summer school, or to a special program or research
project.
If selected to receive a MOPH Scholarship, the applicant will be notified in July. Once the
enrollment information is received by the Department Finance Officer a $1000.00 check
payable to the applicant will be forwarded to the Chapter Commander for presentation. A
similar procedure will govern upon proof of enrollment in the second semester, quarter or
trade school.
FUNDING:
An applicant can possibly receive a maximum of four, one-year $2000 academic scholarships
payable in the amounts of $1000 each upon enrollment for the fall and spring academic years
as outlined above.
SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION SCHEDULE
June 15: Eligible applications are submitted to the MOPH chapter.
July 10: Chapter Scholarship Committee decisions are provided to the Department
Scholarship Officer.
July 15: Announcement of Scholarship awards.
Deadline for Scholarship Applications is June 15: This applies to all required documents and
materials including transcripts, letter of acceptance and letters of recommendation, any
required items received after the deadline date will disqualify the applicant.
